Timetable Planner

Chrome companion · install guide

Why a companion (and why it works this way)

Timetable Planner is designed so that you remain in control of what Banweb / AIMS pages are opened in your own browser. The optional Chrome companion is intended to help you plan using schedule information you already have access to—without the site hosting a shared course catalog or performing bulk retrieval on your behalf.

This approach is intended to align with common expectations around university IT use: course data stays on your device (encrypted in the extension), captures happen only when you navigate Banweb yourself, and nothing resembling a scraped catalog is distributed from this site. Public University guidance materials reviewed so far did not state an explicit ban of this pattern; that is not CityUHK approval. The site and companion are independent, provided as is, and you remain solely responsible for any policy issues arising from your use.

You are responsible for how you use Banweb, AIMS, and this tool. CityUHK staff with takedown or technical questions: use the contact form on smhaseeb.com. See the Privacy & Disclaimer for the full wording.

Open Chrome Extensions

Chrome blocks websites from opening chrome:// pages automatically. Use the button below to copy the address, then paste it into Chrome’s address bar and press Enter.

Try open Extensions page

Or type it yourself: select and copy chrome://extensions

What you should see

After you open Extensions, turn on Developer mode (top right). That reveals Load unpacked on the left—use that to select the companion folder.

Step-by-step install

  1. 1

    Get the companion folder

Use the zip or folder you were given for Timetable Planner. Unzip it somewhere you won’t delete (Chrome keeps using that folder).

  2. 2

    Open Chrome Extensions

Paste chrome://extensions into the address bar (use the copy button above).

  3. 3

    Enable Developer mode

Toggle Developer mode on in the top-right corner of the Extensions page.

  4. 4

    Load unpacked

Click Load unpacked, then select the unzipped extension folder (the one that contains manifest.json).

  5. 5

    Return to the planner

Open the Timetable Planner, sign in, and confirm the header shows the companion as connected.

How to load courses (important)

Use AIMS → Master Class Schedule — not the student Portal course search

Banweb / AIMS and the Portal are different systems. The companion is built for Master Class Schedule pages (P_GetCrse / P_DispOneSection). Opening courses only through the Portal often will not capture the section pages the planner needs.

  1. Sign in to AIMS / Banweb in the same Chrome profile where the companion is installed.
  2. Open Master Class Schedule (course offerings for the term).
  3. Browse or search for courses you care about.
  4. Ctrl+click (Windows) or ⌘+click (Mac) course links so each section page opens in a new tab. A short toast should confirm capture.
  5. Return to the planner — courses sync automatically (or click Sync Banweb).

Tip: pasting Banweb URLs cold often fails (“break-in attempt”). Prefer clicking through the schedule UI.

Updates: replace files in the same folder, then click Reload on the Extensions page.
